This year we will be using the Investigations series!
In addition to that, we have a new computer based math program for you to use both at home and at school: DREAMBOX
We are excited about the changes ahead and hope you will enjoy the new materials that address the new Common Core Standards!
Remember: MATH GAME BINDERS are sent home every FRIDAY and are returned and checked on WEDNESDAYS!
Remember the school wide expectation is to play a minimum of 5 Activities PER WEEK.
3 of those games should be FOCUS GAMES for the unit we are working on in Investigation.
(My little friends who are still working on multiplication facts need to practice those DAILY for 10-20 minutes IN ADDITION to the focus games!)
Now, I realize that life happens. Sometimes we forget our binders, so here is your Plan B.
I have found some resources for you to practice math and put them on this page. So if something
should happen to your binders, I'm sure you'll all demonstrate how you are

MULTIPLICATION TIPS FOR PARENTS
We have been working on double digit multiplication in 5th grade. The Investigations curriculum is far different from the way most adults learned to do math. Unfortunately, the students have not been taught that way (in what is referred to as the standard algorithm.)
Thus, to best help your child in double digit multiplication would be to use strategies he or she has been practicing. Here is a little explanation of some ways math is being taught at Rapid Valley. Pay special attention to the final page which deals with the Box Method. This way of organizing problems by place value has really helped students. (Their teacher wishes she had been taught this method in school!)
Click on the document below for a through explanation of multiple digit multiplication.
( Note: For easy reference, a hard copy of this will be sent home in the Math Game Binder when we start working on multiple digit multiplication in class.)
